Do I have to be a member in order to book the studio or use the darkroom?
Yes, at the moment you do. This is so we can ensure everyone using the space has had an induction and knows how to use the space safely. The membership fee also helps us cover rent and overheads
Where does my money go?
Your £5 a month pays some of our overheads, such as rent and helps keep us afloat while the £15 session fees cover the rest, and contributes to a pot for maintenance, repairs and new equipment. We've kept the prices as low as we can to try and make the space an accessible facility for the creative community
When can I use the space?
Each of the spaces (Darkroom and multi-use Studio) are currently bookable for 2, 3 hour sessions a day, from 10-1:15 and 1:30-4:45.
The days are Thursday-Monday with Tuesday, Wednesday and Evenings reserved for Fish Factory studio holders
What's included in the induction / why do I need it?
For health and safety we need to give everyone, however experienced a brief run through of how the space works and any risks etc. It'll also include things like where equipment is stored and what to do with chemicals etc.
The induction isn't training on how to use the equipment, or perform processes. However we will be offering process based workshops in the future.
What about chemicals?
We will have Ilford Stop and Fix available in the darkroom and film and paper developers available in the shop. We are not a fully serviced space, as a DIY darkroom, we provide the space for you to use and the rest is up to you. We want the space to be flexible and multi-purpose.
What if I don't know what I'm doing?
That's fine, none of us started out knowing what to do, however some knowledge and experience is required if you want to use certain processes. We offer a very basic induction to the space itself with your membership and then its up to you. One of the things we hope to offer soon is workshops on various processes and techniques and there are numerous effective YouTube videos (We've started a playlist here)
Are you part of the Fish Factory Arts Space?
We are based in the Fish Factory space and have developed from their darkroom and photo studio space but are an independent organisation. Our founding members both have studios at the Fish Factory and we offer free membership to Fish Factory studio holders
Can I use the space for workshops or commercial work?
Yes you can. We especially want to encourage members to use the space to run small workshops and skill sharing sessions. All you need to do is book the space out and the rest is up to you.
If you want to offer free skill-share sessions talk to us and we will book the space out for free.
